Woke again around 7am because of the heat. But this time we had gotten smarter. We walked up to the car, climbed in, put the seats back, put on the AC & went back to sleep. I woke around 10am and went & go ice and cooked up some lemonade. Holly woke around 11am and we set up. We once again had a pretty good day. Sold most of the beer. We knew we could sell the rest after the show. I was surprised to see how many people were leaving. We only worked till around 3 and went inside. We saw moe., MMW, Femi Kuti & Addison Groove Project. The fountain which had been so refreshing to was off in the past few days had turned into a mud geyser. Infact the entire Centeroo had turned into on giant mud pit. (see above) We simply took off our shoes and wadded ankle, sometimes knee deep in mud. We went and watched David Byrne for a few songs. I would have liked to see him more but one of the problems with Bonnaroo is the bands you really want to see, happen to play at the same time. We went and caught some of MMW. During MMW it looked as if it might start to rain again so we headed over to grab a spot under the tent for Superjam. Superjam turned out to be Stanton Moore, Maceo Parker, George Porter, Eric Krasno, Neil Evans, Papa Mali, Adam Deitch, Reggie Watts, The New Orleans Horns and others. Holly & myself were excited to see Maceo here. This show definitely had the most energy of any of the music we saw this weekend. At somepoint during the set it started to rain, and then thunder & then really rain. At one point I looked out of the tent to see a wall of water flowing off the tent. Once the rain let up we decided to get over to the main stage since we both really want to see Trey orchestra set.
Trey composing set is what I had been most excited to see. I knew this may be a one time only experience and I was happy to be a part of it. I found the performance amazing. Unfortionately standing knee deep in mud with 40,000 other people in the middle of a field in Tenn. is not exactly the best atmosphere for a classical music performance. Some people around us either did not like Phish or are anger about the break up for they seemed pissed that Trey was doing this classical music thing. Many people talked through it and a minor glow stick war even occurred at one point. More than one person made comments on how arrogant Trey is. This is sad cause you could tell Trey was really excited (and nervous) to be doing this. One person (clearly a dead head) even made some comment how they could do this and mocked composed. I guess they did not realize that Trey had actually written this music for and entire orchestra. In the end I found the music very beautiful and would have loved to see it in the SF symphony hall in stead of in a field with a bunch of ass holes.
The electric set seemed to lack any real energy. It looked as if Trey had been so focused on the classical set (understandably) that he simply did not have anything left to put into the set. We walked for the door during the 1st Tube encore so we could navigate the mud not in a crowd of people. We sold out of our beer after the show and then drove down to our tent and crashed. Tomorrow we are out of the mud and get to shower in a hotel!!!
